CSUST Hosts the Eighth South China Sea Tsunami Workshop

From November 11th to 14th, the 8th South China Sea Tsunami Workshop hosted by the School of Water Conservancy of CSUST was held in Changsha. Professor Jiang Changbo, Vice President of CSUST and discipline leader of hydraulic engineering and Philip L-F Liu, academician from American Academy of Engineering, co-chaired international academic conference. More than 100 experts and scholars and young students from China, the United States, France, Russia, Indonesia, Singapore, New Zealand and Japan and etc, including Professor Chiang C. Mei, academician from American Academy of Engineering, chief experts at home and abroad, Yangtze Scholars, Outstanding Youth Fund winners attended the conference.

The workshop has been widely supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Hunan Science and Technology Department, and universities and research institutes at home and abroad, such as Shanghai Jiaotong University, China Taiwan Central University, Cornell University, University of Hawaii, National University of Singapore and the United States Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

During the opening ceremony, Professor Jiang Changbo delivered the welcoming remarks and sent his greetings to experts and scholars from home and abroad in the field of tsunami-related research and introduced the basic situation of CSUST as well as progress made on tsunami research, and hoped that through this meeting cooperation between coastal marine physicists, geophysicists and coastal disaster prevention and mitigation departments in the South China Sea area could be further promoted and presented his insight to topics related the potential tsunami and disaster prevention in South China Sea area.

The workshop was divided into themed and thematic reports, the former of which was presided by industry leaders introducing the latest research progress, while the latter invited different scholars to report their findings on specific research topics. The workshop was successfully completed and won unanimous acclaim from the participants.
